Ph.D. Candidate in Musicology

Bonnie Ko is a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at Princeton University, supervised by Wendy Heller, Scheide Professor of Music History. Following Ko’s undergraduate thesis on Monteverdi’s “L’incoronazione di Poppea” at the University of Southern California, her research has shifted to focus on gender and queerness in Yue and Peking opera during the early to mid-20th century. Her dissertation explores the relationship between femininity and gender fluidity on the operatic stage and its reflection on nationalism, partisanship and state-building in the Republican era. She also leads workshops on Italian and Chinese singing and serves as the current co-coordinator of the Music Mentoring Program at Princeton.
