Nick Napoli is an architect and architectural historian. He completed his dissertation in the Department of Art and Archaeology in 2003 and taught at Rutgers University, the University of York, the University of Virginia, Bard College and Pratt Institute. He completed a master of architecture degree at City College of New York in 2016 and then joined GKV Architects in New York. He published a monograph on the Carthusian monastery of Naples, the Certosa di San Martino, in 2015, and co-edited the book “Radical Marble” in 2018. His research on San Martino and its connection to Pompeii addresses the role of monuments in the formation of modern Italy. His projects with GKV, on the other hand, present the opportunity to see the interests and aspirations of owners, tenants, contractors and designers on the intimate scale of day-to-day decisions. Research and architectural practice are reciprocal pursuits for Napoli. They demonstrate the importance of both the grand narrative and the everyday anecdote for questions of provenance, ownership and cultural heritage.
